Peter the Great Tour in St. Petersburg

It is hard to overestimate the importance of Peter the Great for the Russian history the course of which was radically changed during his reign. Though his name is inseparably linked with Saint-Petersburg, his most beautiful creation, the understanding of his legacy, his deeds and reforms requires visiting other locations, that are gathered in this 8-day tour, made with an utmost respect to the Tsar's life and work.

Travelling from Moscow to Saint-Petersburg via small towns of Pereslavl-Zalessky and Sergiev Possad we will follow Peter's evolution from an enthroned youth surrounded by independent nobles defying the Tsar's orders to an Emperor, turning the then backward Russia into a leading westernized state.

This program on the basis of 4* hotels with B&B in Moscow and Saint-Petersburg has both included and optional tours which gives you an opportunity to choose between more comfortable or slightly more intense pace of your tour. All transfers between the points of itinerary are included and will be well taken care of.

1 DAY: MOSCOW
Arrival to Moscow.

2 DAY: MOSCOW

Bus city tour “The youth of Peter the Great”.
During the tour, you will pass through the territory of the former German settlement, see the Lefort palace, see the “royal place” of the Golovinsky Garden and the “Preobrazhensk on Yauza” with the White Barracks, some buildings of the 16th century, see the Novodevichy Convent on the Maiden’s Field, which also became a prison for Princess Sophia, who organized the Streltsy revolt.
Time for lunch (not included).
Excursion to Kolomenskoye village “Kolomenskoye in the fate of Peter the Great”.
Kolomenskoye residence of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich keeps monuments of material culture and nature, closely associated with the fate of Peter the Great. You will see the only memorial House of Peter the Great in Moscow, the unique Church of the Ascension of the Lord, ancient cannons on the high bank of the Moscow River, royal gardens and an oak grove with a 600-year-old handsome oak — all these are living witnesses to the formation of the personality of the first Russian emperor.

3 DAY: PERESLAVL-ZALESSKY
Breakfast in the hotel.
Transfer to Pereslavl-Zalessky. Bus city tour “In the Peter's footsteps”, visit to the St. Theodore monastery.
During a sightseeing tour of Pereslavl-Zalessky, tourists will visit Red Square, the ancient city center, where the monuments of church and civil architecture of the 12th-16th centuries are concentrated, which Tsar Peter the Great looked at as late as the antiquity at the end of the 17th century. A visit to the Feodorovsky Convent, where, during the time of Peter the Great and by his decree, a women's political prison was located.

Visiting of lake Pleshcheevo and Bot Fortuna.
Pereslavl-Zalessky, one of the cities of the Golden Ring, located in a picturesque place on the banks of Lake Pleshcheeva. Prince Alexander Nevsky was born here, and many years later Peter the Great built his first flotilla and arranged a grand parade for her. On the high bank of the lake on Mount Gremyach, in memory of this, there is now a museum that stores a unique exhibit — the royal bot “Fortune”, which was for certain built by Peter.
Transfer to Sergiev Posad. Visit to the Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra.
Visit to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, where Peter found shelter and from where he returned to the capital as the sovereign ruler. Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is the largest monastery in the Russian Orthodox Church with a long history. Located in the city center of Sergiev Posad, Moscow Region, on the Konchur River. It has the status of stavropegic. The largest center of educational and publishing activities of the Russian Orthodox Church.

VISIT TO THE HOUSE OF PETER THE GREAT
House of Peter I (The original palace of Peter I or the Red Mansions). 1703, built by unknown builders-carpenters from a pine forest like a Swedish wooden house and painted like a brick. The first residential building and the only surviving wooden structure in Saint-Petersburg. The exhibition includes personal belongings of Peter I and materials telling about the events of the Northern War and the foundation of Saint-Petersburg.

5 DAY: SAINT PETERSBURG

Sightseeing city tour with a visit to the Peter and Paul Fortress and visit to the Central Naval Museum.
You will go on a journey through the history of the foundation, construction and prosperity of Saint-Petersburg from the time of Peter I to the present day. During the trip, you will see many significant architectural monuments, Nevsky Prospect with unique buildings of the 18th century, the gloomy and majestic St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Church of the Savior on Blood, famous for its tragic history and other famous buildings, will appear on your way. Visit the Peter and Paul Fortress, where you will learn how Saint-Petersburg was founded, you will see ancient buildings, casemates and tombs.
After you visit the Central Naval Museum. This is one of the first museums in Russia and one of the largest maritime museums in the world. It has collected over 700,000 storage units, including more than two thousand ship models. Many of them are masterpieces of arts and crafts. The pride of the museum is the famous boat of Peter I.

Visit to the Summer Palace of Peter the Great.
The Summer Palace, one of the oldest buildings in Saint-Petersburg, was built on a small plot of land between the Neva and Fontanka, on the site of the former estate of a Swedish citizen, Major Connau. Peter I lived in this house only from May to October. Because the palace is called the Summer Palace, it has rather thin walls. There are 14 rooms, two kitchens and two corridors. The palace became the summer residence of the emperor: Peter I rested here every summer from 1714 until his death in 1725. You can go inside and find out how Peter I lived.

VISIT TO THE WINTER PALACE OF PETER THE GREAT
The Winter Palace of Peter I is a unique architectural and memorial monument of the first quarter of the 18th century. The official residence of Peter I was located on the territory that the Hermitage Theatre now occupies. In the preserved part of the palace there is a memorial exhibition dedicated to Peter the Great and his era. The rooms of Peter I — the Cabinet, the Dining Room, and the Turnar — recreate a setting that includes genuine objects that belonged to the emperor. The so-called “Wax person” is exhibited here — the posthumous sculptural portrait of Peter I.

6 DAY: SAINT PETERSBURG

Tour of Kronstadt with a visit to the St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral.
This small city is the most remote and unusual of the suburbs of St. Petersburg. Located on the island of Kotlin in the Gulf of Finland, throughout its history it served as the sea shield of St. Petersburg. The tour introduces the fortified city of Kronstadt, with its history full of exploits and brutal tragedies associated with the Russian Navy, revolutionary and military events. The historic center of Kronstadt is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
You will visit the Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker — the largest of the marine churches of the Russian Empire! The main shrine of the Russian fleet The Naval Cathedral rises above the island and the sea and, after restoration, once again bears its unique mission — to serve as the Cathedral of the Sea Glory of Russia, collect naval relics, and preserve the memory of heroic sailors. About a thousand names of naval officers who died from 1695 to 1918 are printed on commemorative plaques inside the Cathedral. in naval battles.

VISIT TO THE MENSHIKOV’S PALACE
Menshikov Palace is an excellent duet of Western and Russian art. During an excursion to the Menshikov Palace, you will plunge into the world of a luxurious interior, striking with its sophistication and grandeur. You will see the Great Chambers, where magnificent receptions and festivities were held. You will also visit the Great Hall, where Peter I held assemblies at the beginning of the 18th century, celebrated military victories and significant events. The lobby deserves special attention. It is decorated with an ancient statue of Apollo, which was made by Roman masters in the II century.

7 DAY: SAINT PETERSBURG

Tour of Peterhof with a visit to the Grand Palace and the park.
Peterhof is a complex of palace and park ensembles in the suburbs of St. Petersburg, created by Peter I as a suburban residence. Thinking of building an architectural structure, in its beauty not inferior to the French Versailles, Peter hardly imagined that Peterhof would be so striking in its scale and luxury. Today it includes several integrated palace and park areas, on the territory of which there are mansions, museums, sculptures, pavilions. The main pride of Peterhof — magnificent fountains, the number of which reaches one and a half hundred. You will visit the Grand Peterhof Palace and take a walk along the Upper and Lower Park of Peterhof.

VISIT TO THE MUSEUM-MODEL “PETER’S WATER AREA”
Museum Petrovskaya Aquatorium in Saint-Petersburg is a mock-up theater dedicated to the time of Peter the Great. This project is dedicated to Saint-Petersburg of the XVIII century. The model is a reconstruction of the most significant sights of Saint-Petersburg and the suburbs associated with the city’s maritime history, on a scale of 1:87. This is the scenery in which the picture of the life of the city of the times of the great Russian emperors from Peter the Great to Catherine the Great unfolds. During the visit, you will touch on the history of the city on the Neva, because the layout lives its own life. Here the time of year changes, the figures move and look at it at night, when the lights come on.
