The locations visited during the cruise
It was Peter the Great's dream to create a navigable waterway to connect the two cities, overcoming 162 meters of altitude difference along the 1800 navigable kilometres. Russia is not as flat as a billiard table and some corrections have been made. So they thought of connecting the Moskva, the river that bathes the Kremlin, first with the Volga and then, in sequence, with Lake White, with the Kovja river, with Lake Onega, with the Svir river, with Lake Ladoga, with the Neva, to get to the Baltic.
MOSCOW
Welcome to the city that never sleeps, the third Rome, the capital of Russia, the largest city of the great country, with almost 15 million inhabitants. During your stay in this metropolis you will learn about the history of the city and visit the most important places: Red Square with the beautiful complex of St. Basil's Cathedral and the GUM Department Store, the Kremlin, Tverskaya Street and the Bolshoi Theatre.
UGLICH
Strange as it may seem, the provincial city of Uglich was the seat of a principality in the 13th century. Uglich is the city where one of the most memorable events in Russian history took place in the 16th century: It was then that the last member of the Ruirik dynasty, the young Tsarevich Dmitry, was murdered. His death plunged Russia into a civil and dynastic crisis known as the Time of Troubles which ended only after 15 years of the Romanov dynasty, successors to the throne. Today you can still see remnants of the past including the Church of St. Dmitry on Spilled Blood, built in 1690 on the site where Dmitry was murdered, with its red walls and blue domes.
YAROSLAVL
It is part of the precious jewels of ancient Russian cities that make up the Golden Ring. Founded in 1010 by Prince Yaroslavl the Wise, the city prospered as a trading port and textile manufacturing center. No other city in Russia except Yaroslavl could boast such architectural richness in the 17th century. In 2010 the city celebrated its millennium.
GORITSY
Welcome to the north-west of Russia, the village of Goritsy is home to the historic Resurrection Monastery. From Goritsy one of our buses will take you to the city of Kirillov, 8 kilometers away, to visit one of the most important Orthodox strongholds of old Russia: the St. Cyril Monastery on the White Lake. Founded in the 14th century, the monastery has preserved its architecture and fascinates visitors with its majestic churches enclosed within its walls. The monastery is also famous for its museum of icons, some of which are the oldest in Russia.
KIZHI ISLAND
Located north-east of Lake Onega and part of the UNESCO heritage site, Kizhi Island is home to the open-air museum of fascinating wooden architecture. Walking on the island, you can see the old wooden churches, chapels, bell towers, peasant houses, granaries, barns, windmills, which were brought from all over the region to show a typical architecture of the north of the country. The architectural jewel of the island is the Church of the Transfiguration (with its 22 domes), the baroque iconostasis and the nearby Church of the Intercession, with nine domes. Another important structure is the modest chapel of the Raising of Lazarus, built in 1391, it is the oldest wooden church still standing.
MANDROGI
Inhabited by talented artisans, Mandrogi is a rebuilt village on the bank of the Svir River to showcase the traditions and lifestyle of the past. Experience life in the Russian province, observing the craftsmen who create the typical matryoshka dolls, wooden sculptures and sewing works. You can visit the vodka museum, which boasts 250 varieties of the Russian national drink.
ST. PETERSBURG
Known as the cultural capital of Russia, St. Petersburg seduces tourists from all over the world with its mix of purely European architecture and its typical Russian history. You will visit the Peter and Paul Fortress, where the Romanov dynasty is buried, St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Resurrection Cathedral and admire the art collection of the famous Hermitage Museum. You will have the opportunity to take a walk in the fountain park in the Peterhof summer residence.
