5 days Walking Tour St. Petersburg

A walking tour in Saint-Petersburg is a tour for active tourists, for those who do not want to waste time in traffic jams and tourist buses, but want to visit the main Saint-Petersburg sights by reseeding to the fastest mode of transport – the metro or the hydrofoil and more often on foot.

This is an opportunity to live a few days as the most ordinary resident of Saint-Petersburg with walks in the historical center, of course, with a visit to the famous Hermitage and Peterhof residence and with the possibility of independent lunches and dinners.

This program can be combined with our post 5 days Walking Moscow extensions with Sapsan speed train or can be sold as a separate weekends stay in Saint-Petersburg.

Saint Petersburg, tucked into a bay in the Baltic Sea of the Gulf of Finland, is built on dozens of islands—fragments of flat land parted by hundreds of waterways, ranging from inky, narrow canals to the 4,000 foot-wide (in places) Neva River.

It’s all twinkling water, supersized European squares, and warrens of smaller streets. Compared to Moscow—that imposing showcase of modern Russia—it’s perhaps a little threadbare in places, but that doesn’t take away from its grandeur.

It’s a city of colorful buildings and in the summer, soft light, especially in the evenings. You should see the city from the water at some point during your stay, but here is our essential land-based crawl across the best small corner of the center, with a sampling of Russian breakfasts, history, art, and Soviet curiosities.

Walking tour of Nevsky Prospect with a visit to Hermitage museum.
To get the most complete and objective view of the great Saint-Petersburg, you should take a walk along Nevsky Prospect.
It is on the Nevsky that a large number of the main attractions of Saint-Petersburg are concentrated: the house of the Zinger company, the Kazan Cathedral, Anichkov bridge and many others. Being the main thoroughfare of the city, Nevsky Prospect is great for leisurely walking. Here you can get acquainted with the masterpieces of Saint-Petersburg architecture and modern structures, as well as places associated with historical events. For many centuries, the main street of Saint-Petersburg was repeatedly rebuilt and updated, but somehow miraculously it was able to preserve its soulfulness, uniqueness and originality until now.
In the course of the tour, we invite you to visit the Hermitage – the main Museum of Saint-Petersburg, one of the largest in the world. Its collection contains about three million works of art.
Especially famous is the art gallery, where the works of the great artists of Western Europe – Raphael and Titian, Leonardo da Vinci and other masters are exhibited.
Time for lunch (lunch is not included).
Optional: Lunch in a local restaurant.
Walking excursion to Peter and Paul fortress.
Peter and Paul fortress in Saint-Petersburg is the oldest architectural monument in the city. The date of Foundation of the fortress is considered the date of Foundation of the Northern capital. The history of the city begins with it. The victory over Sweden in the Northern war required Peter I to urgently settle the conquered territories. An uninhabited island at the mouth of the Neva river attracted the attention of the Emperor when he was choosing a site for the future fortress, the heart of the new capital. The fortifications were built according to the latest fortification science of the time. The program includes a tour of the ancient defensive structures of the fortress, Trubetskoy Bastion, Commandant's house, Mint, Arsenal, Guardhouse, etc. In addition, we will visit the main attraction of the fortress-Peter and Paul Cathedral, which houses the tomb of Peter the Great and other Russian emperors. You will admire the gilded spire of the Cathedral, which is crowned by the figure of a flying angel - the main symbol of Saint-Petersburg!
Return to the hotel by metro.
OPTIONAL: RIVER AND CANALS
A city built over 42 islands, Saint-Petersburg is surrounded by water and interlaced with a complex web of rivers, canals and channels that seem to bind the city together, while also marking the borders of its different districts and neighborhoods. Drift along waterways and see Saint-Petersburg from a different angle on a leisurely boat cruise. Pass under some of the city's 400 bridges and admire the 18th-century palaces, amazing cathedrals, and churches as well as many architectural landmarks that line the banks of the Neva River. Affectionately known as the “Venice of the North”, the city rivals Venice and Paris in its romantic atmosphere. Saint-Petersburg was originally built on 33 islands separated by canals in the delta of the Neva River. Now these canals and rivers offer a unique view of the iconic landmarks that dot the city, such as the magnificent Hermitage Museum – one of the largest art museums in the world and the Vasilyevsky Island with its famous Palace Bridge. Glide past historic monuments and landmarks during this cruise and visit otherwise inaccessible areas of the city.

Stories will take you to Petersburg of the 19th century, and the route will allow you to make atmospheric shots.
From the middle of the 18th century, unified facade lines appeared in the city – and with them the labyrinths of courtyards, doorway systems and passages. You will penetrate into this special world of non-standard Petersburg: you will learn about the reasons that influenced the appearance of the city; learn to distinguish a communal apartment from an ordinary one, understand the difference between the front door and the staircase, hear about the functions of the back staircase and, of course, see the famous courtyards-wells.
